Only 1 in 7 Get This Right: How Many Holes Are in This Shirt?

At first glance, this looks like one of those brain teasers you can solve in about two seconds.

A T-shirt has a neck opening, two sleeves, and a bottom opening. That’s four holes, right?

Not so fast!

Take another look at the shirt. There are also two large tears in the front, and suddenly this seemingly simple question becomes a surprisingly tricky little puzzle.

So, how many holes does the shirt actually have?

Before you scroll down to the answer, take a moment to look closely at the picture. Count each opening carefully, and try not to let your first impression decide for you!

Look Closely Before You Answer

The shirt has the usual openings you’d expect to find on a short-sleeved T-shirt:

  • One opening at the neck
  • One opening at the left sleeve
  • One opening at the right sleeve
  • One opening at the bottom

That’s four standard openings.

But there’s more to notice.

The front of the shirt also has two visible tears. If each tear goes completely through the fabric, those add two more holes to the count.

Now the total is six.

But are we finished yet?

The Trick Behind the T-Shirt Puzzle

Here’s where the wording matters.

A typical T-shirt also has two layers of fabric at the front and back, forming the body of the shirt. If the two tears go all the way through the fabric, they count as two additional holes—not four, even though you may be able to see the inside and back of the shirt through them.

The key is to count each distinct opening once.

Let’s break it down:

  1. Neck opening: 1 hole
  2. Left sleeve opening: 1 hole
  3. Right sleeve opening: 1 hole
  4. Bottom opening: 1 hole
  5. First tear in the front: 1 hole
  6. Second tear in the front: 1 hole

Total: 6 holes.

That’s the straightforward answer if the puzzle is asking you to count the four normal openings plus the two tears.

Could the Shirt Have 8 Holes?

Some versions of this viral brain teaser use a different counting method.

People sometimes count the two sleeve openings and the neck and bottom openings, then also count the corresponding openings at the back of the shirt or interpret the tears as passing through multiple layers.

Under a particular interpretation, someone might arrive at eight.

However, that depends on the exact picture and how the puzzle defines a hole. A hole through two layers of fabric is not automatically two separate holes, and the usual openings should not be double-counted simply because the shirt has a front and a back.

That’s why these puzzles can spark so much debate: the answer depends on what the image actually shows and what counts as a distinct opening.

Why This Brain Teaser Tricks People

The puzzle works because your brain tends to recognize familiar objects quickly.

When you see a T-shirt, you immediately identify its four standard openings. You may overlook the tears because you’re focused on the shirt’s familiar shape.

Or you may notice the tears but start counting every visible edge or layer separately.

The trick is to slow down and establish one consistent rule: count each distinct opening once.

It’s a simple reminder that even an everyday object can become a puzzle when someone asks you to look at it differently.

So, What’s Your Answer?

If you counted four standard openings and two additional tears, your answer is six holes.

Did you get it right on your first try, or did you have to look twice?

Share this brain teaser with a friend or family member and see what answer they come up with. You might be surprised by how differently people interpret the same picture!
